85 is a good focal length. When I got into photography in the early 80s, being something of a contrarian I skipped the standard starter 50mm lens and opted for 21, 35, and a macro-focusing 90 with an extension tube that stretched it to 180. As you found, 85-90 is great for portraits because it lets you get close without being intrusive.
