You're moving, you're both looking straight ahead as the miles roll beneath you, and suddenly you're saying things out loud for the first time. I hitchhiked 10,000 miles across America in 1973 with nothing but a backpack and a guitar, and what I came home with wasn't just stories — it was an education in how human beings open up when they're in motion together. Now I'm the one doing the driving. I'm trying to talk to you the way I used to talk to the people who picked me up on the interstate — openly, unguardedly, two people going where the water tastes like wine and not wanting to be treated that-a-way. Jerry knew what that meant. So do you. Get in.

But it happened to me on July 5, 1976.

I wrote about it in Chapter 23 of my memoir, “Thumb Out” -

One afternoon I was alone in the movie room when Jerry Garcia walked in. I’d met him briefly three years earlier in San Rafael when he played my 1943 Harmony Cremona and told me to let it guide me. He bought a Super 8 projector, and we got to talking about film. He was genuinely enthusiastic — he wanted to make films, loved the medium, and we stood there in that cramped back room going back and forth about cameras and what film could do. A few days later his publicist called and arranged for me to shoot on stage with my Super 8 during a show. Standing on stage filming the Grateful Dead — that was probably the high point of my entire time in the Bay Area.

“Thumb Out” Book One of my memoir trilogy “The Spaces Between” is available now

e-book ~ kindle ~ paperback ~ hardcover ~ subscribe

This Substack is reader-supported. Three years ago when I first started using the RODE CAPTURE app for vlogging, it was a very complicated rig because of the paraphernalia that it took to connect everything. Now my wireless Lavalier mic connects directly into my iPhone 15 Pro Max and the DJI Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal automatically balances my bare phone, making everything fast and intuitive. This is the very first clip I shot and it came out great. I was able to stumble into some special moments with my two retrievers. This is the essence of why I vlog. I am definitely looking forward to doing more of these.
